Planning for Distance Learning in a School District

This summer Roger Sams partnered with a team of elementary music teachers in the Rockwood School District in St. Louis, Missouri to plan for the possibility of online learning in the coming school year.

During this webinar, Megan Meier, Coordinator of Fine Arts, and music teachers Rachel Puleo and Katie Brown will share how they approached this collaboration and the processes they used. They will also share some of the video that they created to support music teaching and distance learning in the coming year.

Katie Brown is a music specialist in the Rockwood School District, where she teaches K-5 general music and directs an extracurricular honor choir and percussion ensemble. Katie has presented workshops for the Missouri Music Educators Association Teacher In-Service Conference, Missouri Choral Directors Association Summer Conference, St. Louis American Orff Schulwerk Association Chapter, and in both the Wentzville and Rockwood School Districts. In 2014 Katie was the guest clinician for the MMEA East Central Division Elementary Honor Choir. Katie holds Bachelors and Master’s degrees in music education, and is a certified Orff-Schulwerk teacher. She received her Master level Orff Schulwerk certification from the University of Missouri – St. Louis in 2018. She currently serves as the vice president for the St. Louis AOSA chapter.

Megan Meier, Ed.S., has served as the Fine Arts Coordinator for the Rockwood School District in St. Louis, MO since 2015.  In her role, she oversees the implementation of art, music, and theatre curriculum in the district’s thirty-one K-12 schools.  She previously served Rockwood as the assistant principal at Westridge Elementary and as the music teacher at Kehrs Mill Elementary where she was selected as Teacher of the Year in 2012.  Beyond her work in Rockwood, Megan has served as a conductor for the St. Louis Children’s Choirs and as music director for multiple churches. Megan earned her B.A. and M.A. (GTRA) in Vocal Music from Truman State University, M.A. in Teaching from Lindenwood University, and Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Webster University.  She is currently a doctoral candidate at Missouri Baptist University.  She holds Level 1 Orff certification and completed Level 1 of the Choral Music Experience.  Academic interests include equity in music education, arts integration, and social-emotional learning in the arts.  Personal interests include St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Broadway musicals, and spending time with her husband, Keith, and children, John, Liz, Norah, and Drew.

Rachel Puleo is a music specialist in the Rockwood School District, where she teaches K-5 general music and directs an extracurricular honor choir.  Rachel has held leadership roles in both the University City and Rockwood School Districts, through wiring curriculum  and presenting professional development.  Rachel holds a Bachelor’s degree in music education, a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and additional coursework and training through educational technology and Google for Education.  She is a certified Orff-Schulwerk teacher. She received her Master level Orff Schulwerk certification from the University of Missouri – St. Louis in 2018.

Charissa DuncansonCharissa Duncanson (kuh- rih-suh  dung-kin-sen) has taught K-5th grade general music in the Metro Detroit area for six years. Born and raised in Michigan, Charissa began her musical journey in elementary school. Throughout her childhood Charissa participated in choirs, bands, and theatre within her community and schools.  She earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Education from Wayne State University and currently teaches at McDonald Elementary School in Dearborn.  As a professional, Charissa has performed and presented throughout the Metro Detroit Area ranging from state conferences to local PD workshops. Being an avid advocate for music education, Ms. Duncanson has served on multiple boards for music education associations. In her spare time  Charissa loves to craft, sew, and go on walks with her husband and dog, Maizey.

BethAnn HepburnBethAnn Hepburn, M.A. Music Education, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. BethAnn is a Teacher Education Instructor for the American Orff-Schulwerk Association on faculty for Orff courses inHawai’i,  New York and Texas. BethAnn teaches General Music grades 4-6, and choir for the Streetsboro City Schools with the distinction of Master Teacher from the State of Ohio. BethAnn is a conductor for honors ensembles for beginning choir and Orff Schulwerk ensembles. She is a former National Board Member for the AOSA, and she serves as the Ohio Music Education Association’s Professional Development Chair for General Music. She is a frequent presenter for AOSA National Conferences, Orff chapters across the United States, and internationally. BethAnn is a board member for the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education with the mission of Equity for All in the arts across Ohio. BethAnn is co-author of Purposeful Pathways: Possibilities for the Elementary Music Classroom Books 1, 2 , 3 and 4. BethAnn is pursuing her Ph.D. in music education at Kent State University in Ohio.

We stand with our students and colleagues of color along with their families and communities. We denounce acts of injustice and violence against Black people and all people of color. We condemn the systemic racial inequalities that diminish their voices and endanger their lives.

Black Lives Matter, and “matter” is the minimum.
Black lives are worthy.
Black lives are beloved.
Black lives are needed.
